Cougars Play Tough, Can't Pull Off Upset at Cal

BERKELEY -- The No. 62 BYU men's tennis team, playing in its second match in as many days, lost to No. 20 California Tuesday afternoon, 5-2. BYU (7-6, 0-0) was led once again by Nic Losee, who won his eighth consecutive singles match, but could not muster enough points to pull off the upset.

Carlos Lozano returned to action only in doubles, and played with Gert Vilms at the No. 1 spot. The No. 10 doubles pair won a close match with Fruttero/Kowalczyk, 9-7. With Jeff Harbach and Jeff Olsen losing at No. 2, the doubles point came down to the No. 3 position. Losee and Erik Nyman, who had won six consecutive doubles matches coming into the Cal match, lost a heartbreaker in a tiebreaker, 9-8.

Losee got revenge in singles play at the No. 3 position. Losee lost the first set, but rallied to win the second and third sets, the final set in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. Olsen picked up BYU's other point, also rallying after losing the first set to win at the No. 5 spot.

The Cougars continue their road trip Wednesday against No. 6 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The match with the Cardinal will begin at Noon MST, and live scoring for the match can be accessed on www.gostanford.fansonly.com.
