Sargeant and Monroe pace Cougars on day one of Regionals

LAS VEGAS – Senior Francis Sargeant and freshman Shane Monroe led four Cougars into the third round of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships Wednesday in Las Vegas. After first-round byes, Sargeant and Monroe both won their second-round matches in three sets to advance. 
 
 
Sargeant beat Fernando Sunago of Nevada 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 and Monroe ousted Montana’s Tomasz Soltyka 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Junior Andrey Goryachkov also received a first-round bye before beating Felix Shumann of Northern Arizona 6-2, 6-2. Jacob Sullivan also advanced into the third round by beating Chris Ramos of Idaho 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Montana State’s Eric Fought 7-6, 6-1. 
 
Six Cougars fell in their opening rounds matches and will participate in the consolation bracket of the tournament. Juan Canales, Robin Pfister, Victor Brown, Aidan Carrazedo, Jeremy Bourgeois and David Ball will be on the court Thursday competing in the consolation draw of main singles. 
 
All five BYU doubles teams advanced into the second round Wednesday. The duos of Sargeant/Goryachkov and Monroe/Pfister both received first-round byes and will play their first doubles matches Thursday in the second round. Brown and Carrazedo teamed up to outplay a team from Northern Colorado, winning 8-7. Bourgeois and Canales won their matchup with a team of a Montana State and Utah State participant 8-5. Ball and Sullivan, the last Cougar duo, beat a team out of Denver 8-4.
