BYU men's golf team holds an impressive lead at John H. Burns Intercollegiate

After two rounds in the John H. Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu, Hawaii BYU holds an eight-shot lead over a challenging field that includes five ranked teams.

"We made some great birdies today and finished strong," said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. "These guys played incredible today. It seemed like even on the toughest holes we shot birdies."

Led by junior Billy Harvey's second round score of 67, BYU shot 14-under par to jump out to a big lead over 24th-ranked Arizona and fifth-ranked Oklahoma State. Harvey who is in second place after two rounds is at nine-under par behind UNLV's Jeremy Anderson.

"A couple of our guys started started out bad, but just played amazing on the back nine, which is supposed to be the toughest part of this course," said assistant head coach Matt Thurmond.

Seniors Andy Miller and Jose Garrido were two who struggled early but both finished under par. Miller shot a second-round 69 and Garrido shot a 70. Sophomores Todd Miller and Manuel Merizalde shot 68 and 70 respectively.

"We've done pretty well, but I've got a couple of guys on this team who feel they can still play a lot better," Brockbank said. "It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow."

The final round will be played Friday before BYU gears up for the Southwestern Invitational in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
