CHULA VISTA, California — BYU men’s golf battled through adverse conditions to finish the second round at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic tied for 10th with No. 20 ranked San Diego State.

“The conditions were extremely difficult today,” said head coach Bruce Brockbank. “We faced hard, fast greens and windy conditions that made the golf course tricky and almost unplayable. Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes and let the conditions get the best of us.”

Despite the tough conditions, the Cougars have a two-round total of 288-306—594 — just six shots back from the top 5, where USC and WCC foe San Diego are tied with a 36-hole score of 588. UCLA leads the 20-team tournament field following a second-round score of even-par 288 for a 36-hole total of 575.

Cole Ponich posted the tournament’s third-best score of the second round and led the Cougars on Tuesday with an even-par 72. He is tied for 13th in the individual standings heading into Wednesday’s final round.

“Cole played superb today,” said Brockbank. “He hit so many awesome shots. It was fun to watch him play.”

The remainder of BYU’s second round scoring included Kelton Hirsch (77), David Timmins (78), Carson Lundell (79), and Max Brenchley (81).

Follow the Cougars’ scoring in the third round from San Diego Country Club beginning Wednesday at 7:10 a.m. PST.
