Barcello earns NABC First Team All-District honors

PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s basketball guard Alex Barcello earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) First Team All-District honors for a second consecutive season on Tuesday morning.

Barcello is joined on the District 9 First Team by Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren and Drew Timme, San Francisco’s Jamaree Bouyea and UC Irvine’s Collin Welp. The Second Team consisted of USF’s Yauhen Massalski, Saint Mary’s Matthias Tass, Santa Clara’s Jalen Williams, Cal State Fullerton’s E.J. Anosike and Long Beach State’s Joel Murray. The All-District honors are voted on by NABC member coaches across NCAA Division I.

Barcello enters Wednesday’s night NIT matchup against LBSU 27th on the all-time scoring list with 1,282 points. He also ranks first in program history in 3-point percentage while ranking seventh in 3-point makes and 10th in 3-point attempts.

The 6-foot-2 guard earned First Team All-West Coast Conference honors for a second straight season after leading the team in scoring at 17.2 points per game. Labeled as the ‘Best Shooter in America’ by ESPN’s Jay Bilas, Barcello is shooting 45.9 percent from the field, 43.9 percent from 3-point range and 87.7 percent from the free throw line.

In WCC play, the Chandler, Ariz. native averaged 16.7 points per game including five games with 20 or more points. He scored a career-high 33 points at Pepperdine on Feb. 12 making 9-of-10 from 3-point range, the most triples in a conference game in program history.

The Cougars host LBSU on Wednesday, March 16, in the opening round of the NIT. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT at the Marriott Center.
