BYU vs. Chaminade Box Score

LAHAINA, Hawaii – Junior Chase Fischer and BYU men’s basketball broke the individual and team records for most 3-pointers in a single game to defeat Chaminade 121-85 Tuesday in the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center.

"I couldn't be more pleased or really impressed with our guys today," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "We fought hard and we competed well last night and didn't come up with the win. With a quick turnaround, you wonder what you're going to get from your guys. I was just really impressed with how focused they were, how dialed in they were.

"We were really good offensively and got better as the game went on defensively. But I've been through some pretty tough turnarounds with a lot of teams, and this one was maybe as impressive as I've seen. I'm happy for our guys, happy for our fans that we got a win and look forward to a big game tomorrow."

Fischer finished with a game-high 30 points, 10 of 13 from deep, and three assists. Fischer's 10 threes broke the team record of nine, set by Jimmer Fredette in 2009 at Arizona. Tyler Haws followed with 19 points and three assists, while Anson Winder contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, three assist, two steals and a block. Kyle Collinsworth added 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.

BYU finished the game shooting 55.4 percent from the field and 58.6 percent from 3-point range, making a total of 17 3-pointers on the day to break the previous school record of 15 that had been set three times. The Cougars also outrebounded Chaminade 50-38 and assisted on 28 of 41 field goals.

Collinsworth opened the game with a spin move for a 2-0 start 11 seconds into the game. The Cougars caught fire from beyond the arc making 12 of 12 with eight of them coming from Fischer. Fischer’s eighth 3-pointer of the game at the 10:45 mark put BYU up 40-28.

With less than eight minutes left in the half, Chaminade cut its deficit to 44-37 before BYU went on a 16-0 run to extend the lead to 23 at 60-37 at the 2:39 mark. Winder’s bucket on the break gave the Cougars their largest lead of the half at 26 points with 1:28 remaining. BYU went into the half up 66-43 while shooting 62.2 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from deep. The 66 points are tied for the most points in a first half in BYU history.

Fischer led all scorers with 27 points, going 9 of 10 from 3-point range, with Winder and Collinsworth complimenting Fischer's efforts with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Haws scored the first points of the second half and followed it up with a three-point play two minutes in to push BYU’s lead to 71-48. With 13:08 remaining in the game, Fischer made his 10th 3-pointer to pass Jimmer Fredette for BYU’s record for most 3-pointers made in a single game. His 10 threes also tied the Maui record for threes by an individual, a total that had been reached twice at the tournament before today.

"My junior and senior in high school I watched Jimmer all the time, and never really knew I'd end up at BYU," Fischer said. "It's awesome to break the record of such a good player. But I think I'm more excited about the win and bouncing back from yesterday."

Winder’s layup with 12:05 left tied BYU's largest lead of the game at 35 points up 95-60. Jake Toolson’s first 3-pointer, BYU’s 16th make from beyond the arc, broke the school’s record for most 3-pointers in a game and also maintained a 108-75 lead with 5:54 remaining. Dalton Nixon’s three-point play with less than one minute left ended the scoring for a final tally of 121-85.

The Cougars will compete for fifth place in the EA Sports Maui Invitational against Purdue on Wednesday at 12 p.m. HST (3 p.m. MST) at the Lahaina Civic Center. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
