Hot Bats, Jacinto Top Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE -- Pitcher Paul Jacinto rode the hot bats of his teammates Friday to secure his first victory of the season as BYU beat New Mexico, 14-9.

Rob Itri, Doug Jackson and Brock Jacobsen accounted for half of BYU's 20 hits improving the Cougars' record to 6-11 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference. It was an exact reverse of BYU's 19-14 loss on Thursday as BYU jumped out to an 11-0 lead through three-plus innings against the league-leading Lobos.

Snakebit for many of his previous seven games, including a 1-0, three-hit loss earlier in the season, Jacinto finally got in the win column. He struck out seven in eight-plus innings to make his record now 1-4 with a 4.89 earned run average.

"I felt good today and knew I had to stay down in the zone," said Jacinto. "Anything that got up seemed to fly out of here."

"It was good to come out and score some runs for him (Jacinto) to give him a cushion to pitch with," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We've been tight and putting pressure on ourselves, so it was nice to come out and have some fun."

Kainoa Obrey's one-out double drove in two runs in the first inning, then Itri knocked a three-run homer to start BYU off with a 5-0 lead.

Jackson hit a one-out triple down the rightfield line and scored on the relay overthrow in the second inning. That triple extended his BYU career record to 20. Jake Stubblefield kept the second inning alive as well as his hitting streak now at 11 games with a double to deep centerfield. Obrey walked and then Jacobsen knocked both runners in with a triple which sent Lobo pitcher Chad Giannetti to the shower.

Four consecutive singles to lead off the fourth helped BYU take an 11-0 lead with three runs scored in that inning. Stubblefield scored off Jacobsen's single, Obrey scored on a doubleplay and Jacobsen scored off Ryan Chambers triple.

The Lobos got on board with a two-run homer from Josh Mader in the fourth with two out.

Jackson, a double shy of a cycle, continued his torrid hitting with a lead off homer on the first pitch of the fifth inning off new Lobo pitcher Derek McCready. Two batters later Stubblefield drilled a monster homer in the direction of UNM's cavernous basketball Pit. Jacobsen scored BYU's third run of the fifth off a double by Itri, making the score 14-2.

UNM, now 14-7 and 4-1 in the MWC, hosts BYU in the finale of a three game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live over KOVO Radio (960 AM), but the game is not available through audiocast or webcast on the Internet.
