In an intense conference game Saturday afternoon, BYU women's basketball team fell to instate foe Utah 53-64.

In the final minutes of the contest, Ute Camie Allen made a shot from beyond the arc to give Utah the lead with just over 5:00 to play. Not willing to go down without a fight, BYU senior guard Julie Sullivan fouled out of the game with 48 seconds left and the score 51-54. Utah would make seven free throws from this point on to finish the game and claim their fourth conference win.

Sullivan was the most dominant player on the floor for BYU, scoring 14 of her 16 points in the first half. Utah was able to hold Sullivan to just two points in the second half. BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said that it was tough to lose a player like Sullivan near the end.

"We played really well for the first two-thirds of the game," Judkins said "...I thought we had momentum."

BYU came out of halftime ready to take control. The Cougars went on a 7-0 run for the first 4:30 of the half to take an 11 point lead.

Momentum switched as the Utes hit 66 percent from 3-point range in the second half. Ute guard Shona Thorburn put down four shots from the beyond the arc to lead the Utes in 3-pointers.

Three Cougars scored in double figures for the game led by Sullivan. BYU senior center Danielle Cheesman recorded her 12th career and fifth season double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

"I saw a lot of good things," Judkins said "now we just need to keep getting better."

Cougar sophomore guard Tiari Goold came off the bench and contributed with a team-high six assists.

BYU (11-7, 2-3) will face San Diego State at home Thursday at 7:00 p.m., and UNLV again on Saturday in a 3:00 p.m., tip off.

Previous Game Recap

Led by senior point guard Julie Sullivan's 17 points, the BYU women's basketball team defeated Air Force, 75-66 last Saturday.

The Cougars and Falcons kept the game close in the first half, each taking turns holding the lead numerous times. With 10 minutes before the half, the Cougars were held scoreless for five minutes as the Falcons pulled ahead by four points. BYU responded with a 7-0 run to take a lead that they would keep for the rest of the half.

Sullivan was dominant on the court with eight points and five rebounds in the first half, and drained a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to put the Cougars up 33-28.

Both teams came out on fire in the second half drilling six of the first seven shots from three-point range. Junior forward Ambrosia Anderson and sophomore center Dani Kubik made two of the six three-point shots to protect the Cougar lead.

The Cougars finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field and grabbed 42 rebounds, compared to the Falcons 38 percent from the field and 30 rebounds.

Senior forward Danielle Cheesman had 13 points and 11 rebounds, recording her 11th career double-double and fourth this season.

Anderson's 11 points gave her the eighth game this season to score in double figures. This was also the 11th game in double figures for Sullivan.

About University of Utah

After two weeks of MWC play, the University of Utah is tied for second place with Wyoming. Both have 3-1 records. Utah's overall record stands at 14-5. Two players are scoring in double figures for the Utes with Kim Smith leading the way as she tallies 16.7 points and a game high 9.4 rebounds a game. Shona Thorburn contributes to the offense with an average of 14.2 points and grabs 6.9 boards a game. To date, Utah is shooting 42 percent from the field, 72 percent form the free throw line and can shoot 36 percent from behind the arc. After 19 games, the Utes are scoring 66.5 points and allow opponents to soot 53.5 points a game.

Head Coach - Jeff Judkins

Overall Record: 69-41, begins his fourth season at BYU.

Under Coach Judkins, the team has gone to back-to-back NCAA appearances as well as to the title games of the MWC Championships, winning the title game in 2001-02.

An all-state selection in basketball, football and baseball, Judkins played basketball for the University of Utah Utah from 1974-78. While playing for the Utes, he helped the team win one conference championship and two berths in the NCAA Tournament.

He was a second-team academic All-American and three-time first-team District VII academic selection. Judkins earned three first-team All-WAC honors and was a member of the 1977 United States World Games team that captured the gold medal.

He played five years in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz. He was a second-round pick by the Celtics in 1978, the same year the Celtics selected Larry Bird with the sixth pick overall.

After his NBA career, he returned to the U of U in 1989, and remained with the men's program for 10 years. Judkins, a Salt Lake City native, graduated from Utah in 1978 with a degree in health and physical education. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the Crimson Club Hall of Fame.

He and his wife Mary Kay, are the parents of five children: Jessica (24), Jordan (22), Jenna (20), Jaime (17), Jaxson (14).
