PROVO, Utah — BYU women’s distance runner Carmen Alder broke a 32-year old Ecuadorian record in the 1500-meter dash as she competed at the Stanford Invitational last week.
The true freshman placed second in the event while clocking a time of 4:16.30, just surpassing the country’s previous record of 4:17.70, set in 1990 by her mother, then Janeth Caizalitin.
Caizalitin and Carmen’s father, Dan, both competed for the Cougars as track and field athletes as well. Caizalitin holds a top-10 time indoor 3000m time of 9:13.68, good for No. 7 in school history.
Alder entered the top-10 ranks during the indoor season herself, standing at No. 7 all time in the mile with a time of 4:36.93. She also won gold medals in the 1500m and 3000m at the South American Junior Championship in Lima, Peru last year.
