BYU Falls to Marquette, 74-71

MILWAUKEE -- In the midst of its longest road trip of the season, the BYU women's basketball team lost a close battle with Marquette, 74-71.

BYU played one of its best games of the season, committing just 12 turnovers and holding Marquette to nine offensive rebounds. The Cougars also went 13 for 31 from three-point territory, but could not hold on for the win.

"I'm proud of them. They played outstanding," BYU head coach Trent Shippen. "This was a really great basketball game. When they play hard like that it's all I can ask for, no matter the outcome."

Senior forward Jill Adams led the Cougars with 24 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Erin Thorn, the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, scored 17 to couple eight assists, while senior Cady Williams added 11 points. Freshman forward Jennifer Leitner also came off the bench to go five of six from the field, finishing with 11 as well.

Marquette was the beneficiary of several foul calls, going to the line 23 times to the Cougars' five attempts.

"That was the difference in the game," Shippen said.

Marquette, ranked 27th in the nation last week, was led by center Abbie Willenborg, who scored 21 points. With the win, Marquette improved to 6-1, while the Cougars fell to 5-2.

BYU will play its fourth road trip in a row Thursday night against Nebraska at 6 p.m.
