Boyce named AVCA and MPSF Player of the Week
PROVO, Utah – BYU senior setter Ryan Boyce has been named this week’s AVCA National Player of the Week and MPSF Player of the Week for his performance in BYU’s wins over then-No. 9 CS Northridge and then-No. 4 Long Beach State.
The awards are the first in Boyce’s career, after leading the Cougars to straight-set wins over the Matadors and 49ers on the road. He dished out 38 assists on the first night, for a 12.67 average, while adding six digs, two blocks and an ace. BYU hit .311 (44-16-90) on the night.
Against the 49ers, Boyce handed out 35 assists as every Cougar in the lineup hit at least .364, and a collective .434 (44-8-83). He added a team-high seven digs along with four blocks. Boyce averaged 12.17 assists, 2.17 digs and 1.67 blocks per set for the week.
This is the 23rd time in program history a BYU player has garnered Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week honors and the fourth for the Cougars this season. This is BYU’s third MPSF Player of the Week selection this season, with previous accolades going to freshman Ben Patch on Feb. 25 and March 4.
The Cougars are ranked No. 1 in the AVCA national poll for the fourth-straight week and received all 16 first-place votes. BYU, sitting atop the MPSF standings, is riding a nine-match win streak. The Cougars look to extend the streak this weekend in their last two regular season home matches as they welcome No. 5 Pepperdine Thursday at 7 p.m. MDT and USC Saturday at 8 p.m. MDT.
