BYU Swimmers Fare Well in Day One of Speedo Cup
IRVINE -- Competing against nine other schools, BYU's male swimmers stormed to a second-place showing and the female swimmers seventh in day one of the three-day Speedo Cup in Irvine, Calif.
After day one, the BYU men's team had an overall score of 326.5, trailing UC-Santa Barbara by 37 points but 72.5 points ahead of third-place Hawaii.
Leading the way for the men was junior All-American Arunas Savickas, who scored a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle event with a 4:27.36, beating his season-best time. Freshman phenom Gary Tan was a runner-up in the 200 IM, falling out of first by just five-tenths of a second. Tan's time of 1:53.47 beat his current conference-best time in the event. The 400 IM relay team also scored big points for the Cougars, taking second, while the 200 free relay team racked up points with a third-place showing.
The women ended the first day in seventh place, thanks in large part to their relay teams. The 400 medley relay team took fourth, while the 200 free relay team finished fifth.
The annual Speedo Cup competition will be held through Saturday, with results posted as they are available on BYU's official athletics home page, www.byucougars.com.
