PROVO, Utah – Junior guard Anson Winder scored a career-high 22 points to lead the BYU men’s basketball team to a 108-76 victory over Mount St. Mary’s in the first game of the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic on Friday.

"I thought we came out with good energy," BYU basketball head coach Dave Rose said. "I thought that our guys responded really well in an uncertain situation with Tyler. I think our guys adjusted really well. Anson came in and had a great game filling in for Tyler and the rest of the bench stepped up. Guys got a lot of playing time and they responded with really positive nights."

BYU shot 60.3 percent from the field, while holding MSMU to 37.1 percent, and dominated in the paint outscoring the Mountaineers 58-10. Six Cougars scored in double digits, BYU outrebounded MSMU 52-32 and scored 24 points on the break.

Winder, who started in place of an injured Tyler Haws, added six rebounds to go with his career-high 22 points, while freshman Eric Mika added a career-high 20 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Kyle Collinsworth finished with his second double-double of the season, 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists. Matt Carlino had an all-around game with 10 points, eight assists, six rebounds, three steals and a block in 24 minutes of play.

"We are all playing as free and confident as we can," Winder said. "The coaches have instilled a lot of confidence in us and I think it shows. Hopefully we can keep it up."

Freshman Frank Bartley came off the bench to finish with career-highs 16 points and seven rebounds with Skyler Halford also posting a career high with 15 points.

The first Cougar points came from an inbound pass to Mika to tie it at 2-2. Carlino then made his first 3-pointer of the game to give BYU a 5-2 lead at the 18:51 mark. Mika got his first block of the game two minutes in, which was followed by a Collinsworth assist to Mika for his first dunk of the season. With 13:23 remaining in the half, Collinsworth drove to the rim for a three-point play to extend the lead 19-14. Carlino got his first block of the season at the 10:45 mark, which came during a 13-2 run by BYU.

BYU went on a 10-0 run, which included two steals by Carlino that led to Winder’s three-point play and an easy Carlino layup to extend the lead 37-19. Bartley went on a solo 6-0 run with a strong move to the basket to complete the three-point play and a 3-pointer on the next possession to grab a 20-point lead. With 0:39 remaining in the half, Winder made his second 3-pointer of the game to end the half leading 54-34.

Winder led the Cougars at the half with 14 points, four assists and two rebounds, while Collinsworth finished with 11 points, two rebounds and two assists. Carlino ended the half with six points, six rebounds and five assists with Bartley finishing with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.

The second half was ignited by Mika’s second block of the game that led to a dunk in transition to extend the lead to 56-34. One minute into the second half, Nate Austin made his first 3-pointer of the game, which was followed by a Collinsworth steal that led to Mika’s third dunk with the assist from Winder at the 17:34 mark. Three minutes later, Collinsworth made a spin move for a two-hand dunk to increase the lead to 28 at 70-42.

With 13:57 remaining in the game, Mika added another three-point play off a touch pass from Winder. The Cougars went on a 15-3 run, which included an alley-oop from Bartley to Mika to give BYU a 101-65 lead and also made it the second game in a row that BYU has scored more than 100 points.

"We look forward to tomorrow and hope we can repeat this game and come out with a lot of energy and see if we can improve a little bit on execution," Rose said. 

The Cougars will continue the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic against Colorado Mesa at the Marriott Center on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. MST. The game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

BYU storylines

• BYU’s game with Mount St. Mary’s is part of the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic and is the first of two games the Cougars will host for the tournament. The Cougars will play Colorado Mesa on Saturday. Both teams are first-time opponents for BYU.
• BYU is off to a hot start on the offensive end, averaging 96.5 points. The Cougars scored 112 points at Stanford, the most the team has scored since 1993, when BYU hung 128 on Sacramento State at home.

• Preseason All-American Tyler Haws has picked up where he left off last season, averaging 29.5 points per game and extending his streak of 20-point games to eight. He now has 31 career 20-point games and four career 30-point games after scoring 31 at Stanford.

CBE Hall of Fame Classic

BYU is hosting Mount St. Mary’s and Colorado Mesa this weekend on Friday and Saturday as part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic. On Nov. 25 and 26, the Cougars will in Kansas City at the Sprint Center. BYU will play Texas in the first game and then either DePaul or Wichita State.

BYU head coach Dave Rose has led BYU to its most successful eight-year run since taking over in 2005. His career record of 211-66 ranks him second in BYU history in total victories and first in winning percentage (.762). Rose has been named conference coach of the year three times, district coach of the year twice, led the Cougars to four conference titles, six NCAA Tournament appearances, two NIT appearances, six 25-win seasons and eight 20-win seasons. In 2010, he led BYU to its first NCAA Tournament win in 17 years and the Cougars have also won at least one postseason game in the three seasons since, including a spot in the Sweet 16 in 2011 and a trip to the NIT semifinals in 2013.

Record streaks

The Cougars will be looking to keep several program-record streaks intact during 2013-14. Coming into the season,  Dave Rose has led the Cougars to eight-straight 20-win seasons and eight-straight postseason appearances, eight-straight seasons with 10-plus conference victories and four-straight seasons with a postseason victory.

Nonconference schedule

BYU’s nonconference slate includes three in-state games, matchups with Big 12 and Pac-12 foes and trips to Kansas City and Springfield, Mass. In all, the Cougars will play six home games, three road games and four neutral site games during the nonconference season. After opening the season at home with Weber State, BYU will play at Pac-12 foe Stanford in the opener of the sixth-annual ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. The Cougars will also play in the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic with two games at home and two in Kansas City against Texas and either DePaul or Wichita State. BYU will also host Iowa State, North Texas and Prairie View A&M, play Utah State at EnergySolutions Arena, vs. UMass in Springfield, Mass., and at Utah and Oregon.

BYU’s newcomers

This season’s roster includes five newcomers – three freshmen, a junior college transfer and an NCAA Division I transfer. The freshmen are Frank Bartley IV from Baton Rouge, La., Eric Mika from Alpine, Utah, and Luke Worthington from Mequon, Wis. Skyler Halford comes to BYU from Salt Lake Community College and Chase Fischer is a transfer from Wake Forest.

• Bartley prepped last season at Future College Prep in California last season and averaged 19.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.7 assists, 3.3 steals and 1.0 blocks while leading his team to the West Coast Prep title.
• Mika earned third-team All-America honors last season while leading Lone Peak to the MaxPreps.com national title and the 5A Utah state title. He averaged 16.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 1.7 blocks.
• Worthington averaged 13.6 points and 10.0 rebounds while leading Homestead High School to a 13-7 record. He was named first-team All-North Shore Conference and all-state honorable mention.
• Halford was a first-team NJCAA All-American and averaged 17.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.6 steals at SLCC. He led SLCC to the SWAC and Region 18 titles.
• Fischer played two season at Wake Forest after a successful prep career at Ripley High in Ripley, W.Va. He averaged 4.5 points and 1.1 rebounds and shot .422 from three last season.

Rose in season and home openers

Under Dave Rose, BYU basketball is 6-3 in season openers and 8-1 in home openers. After dropping his first two season openers in 2005 and 2006, Rose led BYU to four-straight season-opening wins before falling 69-62 at Utah State in 2011-12. Last year, BYU defeated Tennessee State 81-66 in the season/home opener. This season, the Cougars opened with an 81-72 win against Weber State at home. Rose lost his first home opener (also the season opener in 2005) but has since won the last seven home openers.

Rose vs. the state

BYU basketball coach Dave Rose has compiled a record of 28-6 vs. in-state opponents since taking over in 2005-06. He has the best winning percentage (.824) of any coach vs. in-state teams during that time and the most wins (Utah State’s Stew Morrill is second in both categories with a 27-9 record vs. in-state teams since 2005-06 for a .750 winning percentage). BYU defeated Weber State 81-72 in the season opener and plays Utah State at EnergySolutions Arena on Nov. 30 and visits Utah on Dec. 14.
